1. Utilization review and management

Insurers and health plans employ nurses to review requested care against clinical criteria. It is chart-heavy, criteria-driven work with predictable hours, and it is consistently the largest remote category on this board.

2. Case management

Case managers follow members through an episode of care, coordinating providers, benefits and discharge plans. Strong fit for nurses who liked the coordination half of floor work more than the task half.

3. Telephone triage

Triage nurses assess symptoms over the phone against protocols and route patients to the right level of care. Evening and weekend differentials are common because demand peaks when clinics close.

4. Prior authorization

Focused reviews of specific requests: medications, imaging, procedures. Narrower than UM, often listed as an entry point into payer work.

5. Clinical documentation integrity

CDI specialists query providers and tighten documentation so the record reflects the care delivered. Suits detail-oriented nurses with strong chart instincts; certification (CCDS or CDIP) moves you up the pay band.

6. Quality and HEDIS

Seasonal and year-round chart abstraction against quality measures. HEDIS season (roughly January through May) is a well-known on-ramp into remote work.

7. Nursing informatics

The bridge between clinical practice and the EHR. Fewer openings, higher ceilings, and a natural fit if you were the unit’s unofficial systems trainer.
